How Bidirectional Hydraulic Locks Secure Hydraulic Cylinders & Motors: Working Principle Unveiled

2026-01-17

In hydraulic systems, keeping hydraulic cylinders and motors securely in place when there’s no control signal or during shutdown is essential for operational safety and precision. Our bidirectional hydraulic lock—crafted with two Check Valves—addresses this critical need by preventing unintended displacement of actuators, ensuring reliable position retention whenever power or signals are cut off.

Let’s walk through its working principle step by step, using a simple oil circuit diagram for clarity. The hydraulic lock operates in tandem with a three-position four-way directional valve to enable controlled movement and locking. When the directional valve shifts to the right position, hydraulic oil flows in through port A1, pushing the valve core of the corresponding check valve to the right. This action opens the oil path from A1 to A2. At the same time, a secondary oil circuit drives the piston (also referred to as a push rod) leftward, which then presses against the left-side check valve core—opening the oil path from B2 to B1. With both paths unlocked, oil travels from A1 to A2 into the hydraulic cylinder’s chamber, pushing the cylinder to the left, while return oil is routed back to the tank through B2 to B1, facilitating smooth actuator movement.

When the three-position four-way directional valve returns to the neutral position, oil supply to ports A1 and B1 ceases, and the control oil ports lose pressure support. Without this pressure, the valve cores of both check valves spring back to their closed positions, blocking oil flow from B2 and A2. This creates a secure seal that traps oil in the hydraulic cylinder or motor, locking the actuator firmly in its current position—even under external loads, there’s no risk of drift or displacement.

Designed with simplicity and reliability in mind, this bidirectional hydraulic lock features a compact structure that integrates easily into most hydraulic systems. It’s an ideal solution for applications requiring precise position holding, such as construction machinery, industrial automation equipment, Hydraulic Lifts, and more. Whether you need to prevent cylinder movement during shutdowns or maintain stable positioning during operations, our hydraulic lock delivers consistent, trustworthy performance.
